Proper Workplace Erganomics

January 12, 20242 min read

Ergonomics is the process of fitting a workplace or a procedure to a person instead of forcing the person to fit the job. The purpose is to prevent fatigue and work injuries from occurring. While it has long been accepted that ergonomics are important, not every person or every workplace follows the guidelines. Dr. Croxford and our team at Health First Chiropractic in Puyallup would like to look at work ergonomics and how you can stay as safe and healthy as possible.

8 Reasons

Office Work

Sitting at a desk for hours at a time can negatively impact your spinal column. You can minimize this risk by following the tips below.

  • Your computer monitor should be at eye level, with your keyboard and mouse sitting close by. This helps keep your head straight and prevents too much reaching, which can lead to strain in the shoulders, neck, and arms.

  • While the monitor should be at eye level, don’t have it too close. Keep it about arm’s length away. Having it too close can lead to eye strain, which can also cause headaches and tension in the neck.

  • As you sit, your feet should be flat on the floor, shoulders rolled back, and your spine in a neutral position. This helps to keep unnecessary pressure off of the spinal discs.

  • Never hold your phone between your shoulder and your ear. This can cause a great deal of tension and pain in the shoulders, neck, and upper spine. It can also lead to headaches.

  • When you sit down at your desk, be sure to scoot your chair up to your desk. Your arms should always be close enough that they are supported. You should never be so far away that you have to lean.

Manual Labor

When it comes to manual labor, the main concern is lifting. Be sure that you always lift with your legs, not your back. Also, do not lift too quickly. Instead, lift smoothly so that you avoid injury.
